The larger companies that purchased the game usually aren't looking to continue development of the game, or even make repairs. Many small developers dream of the day when they might get a big cash offer for their games. The game wouldn't be on Steam if it wasn't owned by some entity making money off of the sales and paying Steam to list the game. Often, the game is eventually sold to a larger company. Question: If Runic no longer exists, who the hell is getting the money when people buy their old games? At some point, every developer of a non-MMO decides the game is a finished product, and they move on to other projects. If you run regular Time Machine backups on your computer, you might be able to recover a previous version of your game save. If your version of Windows has been configured to save earlier copies of your files, you may be able to simply right click on your game save file and choose Restore previous versions… to revert your save.
